What to use for Childrens’ Sensitive Teeth?
How to Help children with sensitive teeth?
With children it is important to understand what the cause of their sensitive teeth is, a visit to your dental professional is needed. Sensitivity toothpaste is not normally prescribed to children, however, BioMin is a unique product and can be used for ages 3+.
BioMin can be used in 2 ways, as a treatment for kids sensitive teeth and as a toothpaste to help prevent decay / caries that can lead to sensitive teeth.
How is BioMin different to regular toothpaste. Fluoride is the “do-er / active ingredient” in most toothpaste. It however is only therapeutically available for 90 mins (adult strength) and less so for kids’ toothpaste. BioMinF and BioMin F for Kids use fluoride more efficiently and help make the fluoride available for up to 12 hours. Helping to fight decay & remineralise the tooth. BioMin uses around 65% less fluoride vs normal adult toothpaste and about 50% less than kids’ toothpaste. Helping to lower the chances of fluorosis developing, which is a significant benefit.
8 Common causes of sensitive teeth in kids
1. Cavities, we all know a ‘hole in our teeth’ hurts. Poor dental hygiene, a poor diet or sometimes bad generic luck can cause cavities. BioMin is a remineralising toothpaste that assists in preventing cavities, but once there is a hole a dental professional is needed to repair it.
2. New Teeth, losing a baby tooth or gaining an adult permanent tooth can be painful or sensitive. This can be made worse by stimuli such as hot or cold, even a gust of wind.
3. Chipped tooth, minor damage can cause sensitivity.
4. Bruxism / Tooth Grinding, surprisingly many kids clench or grind their teeth when awake and asleep. The root causes need to be treated as it can lead to enamel wear or cracks which both can cause sensitive teeth. A good dentist or hygienist can recommend a cause of action to undertake.
5. Sinus, places pressure on the nerves & can cause sensitive teeth (think about when you have the flu). For kids this may mean a trip to the Ear Nose & Throat specialist to understand the causes and treatment.
6. Enamel Hypoplasia is a tooth developmental defect caused by inadequate enamel (thickness). The thin enamel can cause sensitivity & increase cavity risk. For more info visit the D3 Group.
7. Enamel Hypo mineralisation is a development defect of the enamel caused by a deficit of the minerals in the enamel. The mal formed enamel can cause sensitivity and increase cavity risk. For more information visit the D3 Group
8. Metal amalgam fillings, can cause unpleasant tooth sensitivity. This type of filling acts a shortcut that conducts heat faster than your child’s regular tooth enamel. Since this type of filling is extremely sensitive to changes in temperature, it also causes teeth to expand and contract quickly, putting more pressure on the tooth nerve.

My toddler’s hypodemineralised teeth!
My three and a half year old son had terrible hypodemineralisation after being on many courses of antibiotics in his first two years of life. Within a month of using BioMinF, his teeth look amazing. He loves the mild minty taste. And the bonus is that BioMin is dairy free, unlike other dental mousses, which contain casein. This is ideal for us because my son has dairy allergy. I’m also really happy that he is still getting fluoride. Before and after photos below. – see review
Great Taste. No Decay
My 10 yr old loves the taste of this! His teeth and gums have never been healthier. He had the beginnings of decay at the start of the year which we were going to have to address with his dentist, but now that decay appears to be gone. Jane see review
